Theme: "Chilhood Cancer: Care to Cure - A Global Mission"

1500 participants from over 100 countries gathered in Asia for the first time. This meeting of high scientific standards and social conscience was of great benefit to the end user - the innocent child afflicted with cancer. Jiv Daya Foundation delegates attended the conference and set up a booth in the exhibit area of the Performing Arts Center to share about our plans to help build capacity for providing care to children with cancer. The Foundation also provided 80 scholarships for physicians, nurses, scholars, and survivors to attend the conference. A meeting was held during the conference for Jiv Daya Foundation staff to meet the participants and educate them about the foundation.

Jiv Daya Foundation Fact Finding Mission To India
October 26 - November 2 2007

Delegates of Jiv Daya Foundation traveled to India to spread awareness about the foundation and to assess where they may offer assistance to ongoing efforts for pediatric oncology.
During their time in India, Jiv Daya Foundation delegates attended the conference of the “International Society of Pediatric Oncology” in Mumbai. The foundation provided scholarships for nearly 80 participants to attend the conference. They met 60 – 70 physicians and nurses who expressed a strong interest in receiving training in pediatric oncology.

Dr. Jain and Sarah also visited several hospitals, including AIIMS in New Delhi, Tata Memorial Hospital in Mumbai, Adyar Cancer Institute in Chennai, Kanchi Kamakoti Child Trust Hospital in Chennai, and Sankara Nethralaya Eye Hospital in Chennai. By visiting the hospitals, seeing firsthand the wards, and evaluating the needs of each institution, Dr. Jain and Sarah were able to get a true picture of the current scope of pediatric oncology in India. In addition to visiting hospitals, Dr. Jain and Sarah made site visits to many schools and organizations which the foundation also supports. The success of the trip and the connections they made has allowed the foundation efforts to take off with full force. In addition to identifying candidates to receive training, they are collaborating with health care providers in the US and abroad to join forces on this important initiative by serving as host Institutions for the training program.

The trip to India also lead to the involvement of Jiv Daya Foundation in the development of the Indian Leukemia Cooperative Group. This effort will be focused on creating a common protocol for Institutions to follow through the capture of data and research. By creating a partnership for Indian health care providers and choosing a common curriculum and protocol, all will be better equipped to treat children with cancer. The end result will be of benefit to the entire country and help to raise the survival rates of children with cancer.
