Jiv Daya Foundation Grant Guidelines and Requirements
How To Seek A Grant
There are several things that we look for in a grantee. First and foremost, we will ascertain that the purpose of the potential organization or project matches the foundation’s purpose or interests. Other issues that may be of concern, and which help to establish the grant seeking organization’s credibility, include:
Evidence that the organization is well known in its community and addresses an existing need.
History of funding by other sources, whether governmental or private.
A demonstrated sound fiscal management of the organization, including the use of past grants.
A strong, involved board of directors of the organization.
A committed membership and, if applicable, a committed group of volunteers.
A qualified administration staff.
A realistic budget.
The legal and tax status of the organization.
Steps For Obtaining a Grant
The success in obtaining a grant or funding for a project is the result of a careful and thorough thinking and planning. This thinking and planning clarifies the nature of the project, its objective and the resources that it may take. How can this be done? Here are some suggestions:
Start by writing all your ideas on paper.
Thoroughly describe what you have in mind about the project or program.
Define the objective and the goals to be accomplished with the project.
Consider which steps are going to be needed to accomplish the objective and goals, and how long each of them may take.
Estimate a budget of costs for staff, materials, and equipment.
Write the job descriptions for the staff that your program will need.
Plan for the evaluation of your program so that you will know if you are really accomplishing your objective and goals.
Once you have clarified for yourself the nature, objective and goals of the project, and once you have designed a plan of action that will make the project a reality, you are ready to start looking for potential funders. This may seem a daunting task, but there are many resources available at your local public library and on the Internet that can help to narrow the search to those potential foundations or grantmakers which may be interested in your project. At your local library you can inquire for directories of foundations and other organizations, private and governmental, which regularly provide funding for diverse kinds of projects.
Preliminary Grant Requirements
Before a request is made to a foundation for a grant or program-related investment, a brief letter of inquiry is advisable to determine whether the foundation’s present interests and funds permit consideration of the request.
The letter of inquiry should include a brief description of the following elements:

Needs or issues that the proposed project will address.
General information about the organization conducting the project.

Period of time for which funds are requested.
Information about those who will be engaged in the project.
Grant Proposal
After receiving the inquiry letter, once it is agreed that the request can be considered, the foundation’s staff will ask the grant seeker to submit a formal proposal.
Your proposal should include:
A description of the proposed work or project, how it will be conducted, and how its results will be measured.
The names and qualifications of those engaged in the project.
A detailed budget of the project to be funded.
The specific amount of funds that are requested.
