Site Overview
The Regional Cancer Center of Trivandrum (RCC Trivandrum) is one of 26 Regional Cancer Centers in India, established under the National Cancer Control Program in 1981. RCC Trivandrum is a comprehensive cancer center catering specifically to the population of Kerala, but also to adjoining parts of Tamil Nadu and Karnataka. Their pediatric oncology ward is well-established and sees about 100 patients per day.
Project Overview
The Foundation’s first and oldest project began in 2008, after the Foundation team met Dr. P Kusumakumary at SIOP 2007 in Mumbai. Dr. Kusumakumary has built an amazing team since the MOU between JDF and RCC was officially signed in April of 2008. Because of the success of the project each year and the dedication of the staff, the pediatric oncology unit has grown into an excellent model. Currently, the Foundation supports one project officer, three nurses, one data manager, one social worker, and one pharmacist. Since project initiation, the staff has witnessed improvement in the quality and regularity of care. Programs include psycho-social support, parent support groups, cultural activities, meditation sessions, and entertainment, all of which have been shown to improve outcomes and quality of life for patients and families. JDF support has also improved routine procedural sedation and regular, multi-specialty brain tumor clinics.
