Site Overview
PGIMER, located in Chandigarh, was founded in 1962. They strive to provide high quality health care, meet the need for qualified medical teachers, and undertake community-based research. PGIMER’s Department of Pediatrics is one of the largest in India. In 2007, the Pediatric Oncology Ward saw 330 new patients and 2932 old patients. In total, the Pediatric Hemato-Oncology Ward registers about 600 new cases a year.
Project Overview
The partnership between JDF and PGIMER began in August 2009, with the Foundation providing salary support for pediatric oncology ward personnel. This JDF-supported staff currently includes three nurses, an administrator, a field worker, and two data managers. The assistance of the nursing staff in chemotherapy administration and the increased capacity for follow-up provided through the data managers and field worker ensures that PGIMER’s patients will receive the best care possible. PGIMER has also trained the three nurses in chemotherapy administration, infection control, and procedural sedation, which is vital in allowing doctors to focus on patient care. Without support from JDF, this might not have been possible.
