Site Overview
Located in Vellore, Tamil Nadu, CMC is one of the premier medical institutions in India. It was founded in 1900 by Dr. Ida Scudder, the daughter of an American missionary. Today, CMC Vellore is a tertiary care hospital that sees almost 5,500 outpatients a day from all over the country. It has grown to be one of the top medical schools in the country, a feat made even more impressive by the fact that CMC Vellore raises its own funds to continue operation. Their palliative care unit sees over 1200 new cancer patients per year from a wide variety of geographic locations.
Project Overview
The MOU between Jiv Daya Foundation and CMC, Vellore was executed in February 2011 at the India Association of Palliative Care Conference in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh. Palliative Care Services at CMC started in 2002 and expanded to include nursing, social work and home care with a team of volunteer and part-time staff. The unit offers outpatient, inpatient and homecare and supports a charitable hospice. The unit was also the first to start a Residential Fellowship in Palliative Medicine,(2007) specialized Palliative Care Chaplaincy Services (2002) and clinical rotations for oncology residents (2002). Through links with The Christian Medical Association of Palliative Care, The Indian Association of Palliative Care, Pallium India, and other organizations, the unit strives to increase palliative care coverage. Jiv Daya Foundation is providing one doctor, one nurse, and one psychologist.
